fIRST TIME VOTER?

Important: All voters must provide a Proof of Residence document along with their photo ID when registering to vote by mail, in-person in the clerk’s office, or at the polls on election day.

Acceptable Documents to Show Proof of Residence
  • A current and valid State of Wisconsin Driver License orState ID card  
  • Any other official identification card or license issued by a Wisconsin governmental body or unit
  • Any identification card issued by an employer in the normal course of business and bearing a photo of the cardholder, but not including a business card  
  • A real estate tax bill or receipt for the current year or the year preceding the date of the election
  • A university, college, or technical college identification card (must include a photo) ONLY if the voter provides a fee receipt dated within the last 9 months or the institution provides a certified housing list to the municipal clerk  
  • A gas, electric, or telephone service statement (utility bill) for the period commencing no earlier than 90 days before the date of registration  
  • Bank or credit card statement  
  • Paycheck or paystub
  • A check or other document issued by a unit of government
  • A letter on public or private social service agency letterhead identifying a homeless voter and describing the individual’s residence for voting purposes  
  • Residential lease that is effective on the date of registration (Not valid if registering by mail)
  • An intake document from a residential care facility such as a nursing home or assisted living facility

Step 1: Request your ballot ASAP HERE

  • Must first be registered to vote

Step 2: Fill out your ballot

Your ballot contains two envelopes: (1) A secrecy envelope and (2) A return envelope  

  • Step 1: Vote by completely filling in the circles on the ballot using either blue or black ink
  • Step 2: Once filled out, put your filled-out ballot into the secrecy envelope and seal
  • Step 3: Put your secrecy envelope into your return envelope
  • Step 4: Read and sign the oath
  • Step 5: Your ballot is ready to send

  • Mail it in: Stamp and use the pre-addressed envelope mail in your ballot

What type of ID DO i NEED?

Wisconsin Requires a Photo ID to Vote.

Acceptable Photo ID’s
  • Wisconsin’s Driver’s License  
  • Wisconsin State Identification Card
  • Military ID card
  • U.S. passport book or card
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Identification card issued by a federally recognized Indian Tribe in Wisconsin
  • Wisconsin DMV ID Petition Process Photo Receipt
  • Veterans Affairs ID card
  • Photo identification card issued by a Wisconsin accredited university or college, or technical college that contains the following:
  • Date the card was issued
  • Signature of student
  • Expiration date no later than two years after the date of issuance
  • If the student ID is expired, it must be accompanied by a separate document that proves current enrollment, such as a tuition fee receipt, enrollment verification letter, or class schedule
No ID? Provisional Voting
  • A provisional ballot is a special kind of ballot given to voters who can't provide the necessary documents required by federal law in Wisconsin to vote at the polls.
